Overall objective: The MAXIPLAN project vision is to prototype, pilot and commercialise our nutritious, easy-to-use and pathogen-free aquafeed, for more efficient and productive marine finfish and shellfish aquaculture hatcheries.

MaxiPlan will transform marine fish aquaculture and help pave the way for local shrimp aquaculture in Europe. The aim is to deliver the first off-the-shelf aquafeed based on the offspring of barnacles that have a far superior nutritional profile to current mainstay feeds.

Problem to address: To meet rising worldwide demand for high-quality seafood, a 30% increase in global aquaculture production is needed by 2030. Production of high-quality juveniles is a key bottleneck in marine aquaculture. Today´s natural live and inert aquaculture feeds to support aquaculture species in early development use Artemia, rotifers and phytoplankton grown locally at hatcheries. Although they are a very poor nutritional match for most marine species in aquaculture, there has not been an industrial alternative to rotifers and artemia since their introduction some 40 years ago.

Our innovative solution:
Planktonic AS´ (PLT) ground-breaking production process involves cultivating and harvesting barnacles, isolating the nauplii (i.e. early barnacle larvae), and preserving them by cryopreservation or hard sterilisation (figure 2). Our nauplii are from two distinct barnacle species. At only 220-350μM in length, they are small enough to replace most current feeds. Barnacle nauplii contains 80% phospholipids of total fat rich in essential marine fatty acids that are crucial for optimal development of finfish and shrimp. The nauplii contain their nutrients locked up inside until consumption, leaking negligible protein to seawater

The MaxiPlan project will secure market readiness for two related feed products, CryoMax for finfish and SteriMax for shrimp. CryoMax is a unique cryopreserved live feed. Industrial quantities of barnacle nauplii are deep frozen so they have a virtually unlimited cryo-storage shelf life. Hatcheries then follow a simple 6h thaw process to obtain vibrant live nauplii. This means unprecedented stability and reproducibility. SteriMax contains inert sterilised nauplii with up to 5-year shelf life that are directly applied to culture tanks. All our nauplii contain phospholipids rich in highly unsaturated fatty acids as DHA (25%) and EPA (27%) that are highly bioavailable to marine larvae. This is 250x more than premium AF Artemia aquaculture larval feed. The larvae selectively consume our nauplii over current feeds because barnacle nauplii are a natural oceanic prey. Importantly, MaxiPlan poses a much lower disease risk than current feeds. Only 4.5% of protein in SteriMax (and even less from CryoMax) leaches to tank water over 4h, so the superior nutrients in our feed are not lost prior to consumption and do not promote detrimental opportunistic microbial growth in the culture.

CryoMax contains a healthy community of slow-growing harmless microbes. SteriMax is hard-sterilised at 112oC, which results in the verified destruction of all microbes. MaxiPlan is 100% free of 10 common marine pathogens in 80 separate product batches that we have tested to date.
